Based upon the reviews I did not install the logitech software and have had absolutely no problems using the mouse with my Vista notebook, the mouse is small, but I find it very comfortable to use, better than most larger mice...dosn't have a bunch of extras, standard button and a wheel..the on/off switch on the bottom is a good feature, but you may forget to us it on occasion... Have used the mouse for a bit over a month with no indication that the battery has run down... I purchased this for use as an external mouse when I got my new laptop with built-in Bluetooth (a Dell Vostro 1500). There are many things I like about this rodent:

1) Since I'm left handed, I want a symmetrical mouse, one whose shape is not formed for the right hand. This mouse qualifies (unlike a lot of Logitech mice).
2) Although it is on the smaller side, it still feels comfortable in my large hand. I have hands that can easily palm a basketball, so many travel mice are unusable for me because they're too dadgum small!
3) Laser precision, and no annoying red light. Nuff said.
4) An on/off switch on the underside so you can turn it off, throw it in the laptop bag, and not have to worry about it bumping up against something, clicking, and waking up the laptop. This also helps conserve the batteries (see #5 below).
5) It's pretty miserly with battery usage. I've had this mouse about six weeks as I write this review, using it an average of about two hours a day, and I'm still on the original Duracells that came in the package.

If you want to use the side scrolling features of this mouse, you'll have to install LogiTech's SetPoint software. All basic mouse functions can otherwise be handled by the Windows default drivers.

Overall, this is a good product. I wouldn't have this mouse on my primary gaming rig, but that's not what it's designed for. I purchased a Logitech V470 Cordless Laser Mouse from newegg.com, the mouse died in about a week, and Logitech quickly replaced it. I'm a very satisfied Logitech customer. In the process, I discovered a quick work-around for a laser mouse that doesn't track. Details follow.

First the bad news:

About a week after I received the mouse, it stopped tracking. The right and left mouse buttons continued to function, but the mouse wouldn't move the cursor on the computer display. I couldn't return the mouse to newegg.com because I already had applied for a rebate. I looked for a toll-free telephone number for Logitech customer service, but couldn't find one. I found a toll number and had to pay for the service call myself.

Now the good news, and it's really good:

I called Logitech customer service, and they answered on about the second ring. A very friendly and knowledgeable service representative, who obviously was somewhere in the U.S.A and not offshore, patiently listened to my description of the problem. He asked me to try the obvious fixes, which I already had done. I'm not going to tell you the rest of the details because that might cause someone to abuse Logitech's customer service policies, but the bottom line is that I now have a new Logitech V470 Cordless Laser Mouse that works perfectly with my Apple Powerbook G4 running OSX. I haven't used the mouse enough to assess its longevity, but I'm a very satisfied Logitech customer.

Work-around for a laser mouse that doesn't track:

If you have a laser mouse that doesn't track, and you can't return it, try this, which I discovered in troubleshooting the defective mouse. Find a relatively hard, stiff, flat plastic sheet, large enough to be a mouse pad. The plastic should be similar to the blister-pack packaging used for small products like the mouse. The clear plastic cover of a report binder works great, and so would a flat sheet cut from the back of a large blister pack. Using fine sandpaper, rub the surface of one side of the plastic sheet until it's covered with tiny scratches but not uniformly dulled. Use the plastic sheet as a mouse pad with the scratched side up. Apparently, the plastic helps reflect the laser beam back into the mouse's sensor, and the scratches interrupt the reflections enough to tell the sensor that the mouse is moving.

This little mouse is excellent. It has excellent battery life, excellent sensitivity, etc. It just works, and it's a delight to use. I had bought 2 other of the previous generation V270 and given them to my college student kids. (One is careful with equipment, the other is not...) They've had them for a total of 4 years and both of them report no problems. They come with a little cloth bag/container which might help protect them from scratching when packed away.

Finding a Bluetooth mouse is not trivial. With Bluetooth built in to serious laptops buying some other kind of wireless mouse makes no sense whatsoever. All laptops should come with Bluetooth built in and if you wanted a wireless mouse - Bluetooth and this model would be the way to go.

The mouse is compact (semi-small, but not the smallest I've seen) but all users, big and small hands, seem to have no problem with it's ergonomics/size.

The only negative was that the instructions do not have any hint on what PIN code to use when you first associate the mouse with the laptop via the Bluetooth connectivity app. I found this in some FAQ online. The default PIN seems like a ridiculous (and irresponsible) value to use. Is there some way to change it?
