I think I bought my first one two years ago. A year later, it began double clicking when I only wanted to single click, this became a real problem. Kensington fortunately has a five year warranty on them and sent a replacement quickly. Now, less than a year later, the optical sensor goes out. I don't know if it's bad contact with the batteries, but I have to shake it and bang it to get it to work again. Sometimes I have to do it frequently. I keep the battery cover off so that I can roll them around at any time. I may claim another one on warranty, but I'll use it as a back up for another brand I buy to use as my primary.
