Summary: This is a fine mouse with good button feeling/action but three of the buttons are all but unusable.

I would definitely recommend to left-handers (heck, what choice do have for contoured mice?). Fair programmability (see below). Some interference (jiggy movement) from cordless phone (switch channels to eliminate). Don't let my detailed gripes stop you from buying. I'm hoping the marketing beanies at Logitech see this and make effective change for future products.

Pluses:
Action of buttons is good. Forward/Back buttons are solid and feel good. The fact that the middle wheel has tilt buttons (tilt left and tilt right are separately programmable) is a bit plus! Those tilt buttons are really nice and the action is very good on them.


Minor Gripes:
The wheel button is WAY to stiff. You can forget it's there, basically (read on for why that is).

No model markings. ANYWHERE! Ten years from now when you need new drivers for Windows 8, you'll never remember the model number. I had to use my label maker to affix a label to the back side of the battery cover.

Reconnect feature (presumably to swith RF channels?) not very discoverable in the documentation. You have to search for connect.exe and run it to eliminate interference from other RF sources (cordless phone, cell phone, etc.).

No mechanical on/off switch. Be sure to take the batteries out if you go on vacation!

Plus/Minus and Mute buttons are just a little too small and placed to forward for my liking. You get used to it though.

Major Gripe - Programmability:
Programmability is seriously lagging. I've had many programmable mice over the years, and this one is good, but fails to live up to the potential, or even past versions of Logitech mice. If you thought "Hey! lots of buttons. I can program all my macros!" - forget it. First-

1) Unless you are totally wowed by the Mail and IM notification/activate buttons then fine. But for the rest of us, forget they are there. They are NOT PROGRAMMABLE! The mail button will only ever map to the default mail application as specified in Windows. You can only specify IM applications that are installed. You can't make either of these buttons do custom actions.

2) YOU CANNOT CREATE MACROS for the mouse buttons. You can assign a single keystroke or keystroke combination, but you can't do something like "Alt + Tab, Right Arrow, Enter"

3) There is a list of "Other" tasks you can assign to buttons, but there are not many choices, certainly not as many as Logitech software in the past has presented. The choices are:
Back, Close, Copy, Cruise Down, Cut,
Do Nothing, Document Flip, Double Click,
Drag Lock, Left Click, Maximize, Middle Button,
Minimize, Page Down, Page Up, Paste,
Redo, Start Menu, Unassigned, Undo
(I don't know what the difference between Unassigned and Do Nothing!)
Thanks much for AutoKeys because you can't program keyboard plus mouse clicks with the Logitech software or Windows (Aside: the Ease of Access center in Windows is a joke for not including keyboard macros).
What happened to the old Run Program option? What happened to Switch Windows (Document Flip brings up the crazy Aero 3d thing)? What about a macro editor for performing multiple tasks? My $39 text editor has a macro editor (UltraEdit: GO GET IT NOW!).

4) The middle wheel button is unusable. It is too stiff and that alone makes you not want to use it (it's at least four times as stiff as the other buttons. Yeah, I measured this precisely! Sure, I did, er, um...) But the real issue is that if you program the wheel tilt buttons (left and right), which are a dream to use by the way, you MUST ASSIGN THE MIDDLE WHEEL BUTTON TO THE "DO NOTHING" ACTION. This is because the tilt buttons take little force to actuate, but the wheel button takes way more force. So, no matter how hard you try, you will set off one of the tilt button actions instead of the wheel button action. Just accept that the wheel button is totally useless and you'll be fine.

Most comfortable mouse I've owned. Back and forward arrow keys are great, sideways scroll is great. The scroll wheel click (pressing the scroll wheel down to open a new tab or whatever you have it assigned for in a game) takes a little getting used to and more often registers as a right click unless you're careful. The laser sensor isn't perfect. I assume it'd be fine to use as intended, on a desk on a mousepad, but I use it for a media center in my living room, no desk, no mouse pad, and the surfaces it picks up on are sparse. You start to train yourself to use your mouse wrong just to use it right. At least the range is good, I get about 10ft perfect. Really, don't buy this.

I made the mistake of heading off to the shop without doing my research, and bought the Microsoft Wireless Notebook Laser Mouse 6000 because it seemed like it did what I needed and the price was right.

From the moment I started using it, it was a nuisance.

First off, the movement is jerky and there seems to be no way around it no matter what you do with the Microsoft mouse software. I am using a Mac and the best way to describe the motion is that it makes it work like a mouse does on Windows - sometimes moves one pixel, sometimes moves two or three, rather than the smooth movement Mac users are accustomed to.

Secondly, the battery lasts at most a few weeks. I am a heavy user (on the computer 12 hours a day) so I didn't expect to get the 6 months they were claiming. But with this thing I've been through batteries in as little as two weeks! It's preposterous.

Thirdly, the rubber grip coating on the sides started coming off within a few days after I got it. Little shreds of rubber, like you get from a pencil eraser, were constantly collecting on my desk and getting trapped under the mouse. Within a couple months, the rubber was almost completely gone from one side of the mouse.

Fourth, the radio receiver is near useless. I use the mouse two feet away from the receiver, on a desk. The only thing between the mouse and the receiver is an ordinary wired keyboard. I am not using wifi or any cordless phones or baby monitors or missile tracking systems or interstellar radar arrays or anything else. Yet, I had to connect the receiver to a little USB hub and perch it on an empty peanut butter jar just to get it to talk to the mouse at all. Every few days it stops and I had to move the jar around a few inches here or there to get it back in communication.

Fifth, it would wake my computer up from sleep at random times. Not every night, but a few times a week I would come in the morning and find the computer had been up for hours. Disconnecting the Microsoft receiver from the USB port stopped that from happening. I can confirm that the desk was not being bumped, and in any case, mouse movement shouldn't wake it up from hard sleep.

Exasperated, I went online and actually read the reviews for wireless mice, and ended up buying a Logitech V220. It solved every problem: pointer movement is smooth as silk, the battery's lasted for two months so far, the rubber grip is as good as new, it has no problems talking to the USB receiver, and the computer sleeps happily through the night.

Only things I miss from the Microsoft mouse were the extra little button on the side, and the Microsoft mouse's quieter scroll wheel. UPDate: I got the second replacement. It is much better but still not nearly as good as my logitechs. It seems the laser must be ultra sensitive and responds to texture as well as surface movement. I am using it with HP's matching mouse pad and it will move the point just from the pressure of mouse clicking. This means many erroneous selections. I have ordered another Logitech and will return this when that one arrives.

The first one of these purchased would not work reliably on any surface other then a black piece of wood. I have similar priced laptop mouse from logitech and logitech mx1000. I found these mice work on any surface other than glass. This mouse was returned to Amazon and replaced. The replacement worked much better. I still find that it seems to function with less predictable precision than my logitechs. I bought this to match my HDX18 laptop and for the miniature USB dongle. The later is the best part of this product. I now see logitech has a similar priced mouse with this type of adapter. The 5 stars for portability come from this one feature. Nothing is more irritating than forgetting the dongle when packing up and damaging it or worse the laptop port. The short dongle is left in and forgotten.

Ergonomically it falls short as well since the buttons seem poorly placed to be reached instinctively and the mouse just does not fit the hand properly. I will keep it but doubt it will have a long life with me.

I own two of these with the companion keyboards to navigate and pilot my boat across 3 displays. I don't have a flat surface so an air mouse was my preferred option.

Don't buy an Air Mouse from any manufacturer for general desktop use unless you have no desktop! These products do have a learning curve and none of them work as precisely and easily as a dedicated desktop pointing device. Once learned though I now command my desktop with the wave my hand almost as quickly as I do with on the desk. The Gyration product doubles as both an air mouse and a desktop mouse so when a flat surface is available viola! There is a button on the mouse that must pressed when you want to move the pointer on screen while in Air-Mode. Thank goodness, otherwise every hand motion would move the pointer! The supplied driver includes features to define tasks, open apps, locate the pointer, all very useful and easy to assign - no programming required.


The device is heat sensitive, so if left in the sun they stop working until cooled. Also the 100' broadcast isn't as strong as I had hoped so about mid-day the mouse motion sometimes becomes intermittent even when I am only 20' away through a single wall. In fact one of my devices is rated for 30' and the other for 100' and I really can't tell the difference when swapped.

Otherwise, I love them as they are my daily work horse and have been aboard for the last (2 years) ~3500 nautical miles.
